When Code 128 fits

Code 128 represents the full printable ASCII set and automatically switches among its internal code sets to reduce symbol width. It is common in warehouses, shipping labels, asset tracking, and internal workflows where you control the identifier.

Limits and print guidance

This generator accepts up to 80 printable ASCII characters. Longer values can make a one-dimensional symbol too wide for reliable printing and scanning, so use a shorter identifier or consider Data Matrix.

  • Keep strong contrast between dark bars and the background.
  • Preserve the blank quiet zone at both ends.
  • Test the final label at its intended print size and distance.

Does Code 128 need a check digit?

Yes, the format contains a mandatory internal checksum. The encoder calculates it automatically; it is not part of the text shown below the bars.

Can I encode lowercase letters?

Yes. Uppercase and lowercase letters are distinct, and both are supported along with digits, spaces, and printable ASCII punctuation.

Is Code 128 the same as GS1-128?

No. GS1-128 uses Code 128 symbols plus GS1 application identifiers and FNC1 rules. This pilot creates ordinary Code 128 only.

Why is my barcode very wide?

Width grows with the encoded content, especially mixed text. Shorten the value, print it larger, or use a two-dimensional format when label width is limited.
