Choosing a symbol size
Automatic mode selects the smallest square symbol that holds the content. Fixed 32×32 and 52×52 options are provided for label specifications that require consistent dimensions, and validation stops content that exceeds the selected capacity.
- 32×32: up to 62 printable ASCII characters
- 52×52: up to 200 printable ASCII characters in this pilot
- Automatic: up to 200 characters, with the encoder selecting the size
Traceability and direct-part marking
Data Matrix is designed for dense data and error correction, making it useful on small labels and marked components. The example separates a part ID and lot with a vertical bar, but your downstream system must define the actual field syntax.
- Preserve a clear quiet zone around all four sides.
- Avoid resizing to non-integer module dimensions for raster output.
- Validate the mark after the real print, etch, or laser process.
Data Matrix generator FAQ
Why use a fixed Data Matrix size?
A fixed size helps when a production or labeling specification requires known module dimensions. Automatic sizing is better when no such requirement exists.
What happens when content exceeds the selected size?
The generator shows a capacity error and removes the preview and download actions, so it never asks the encoder to force data into an undersized symbol.
Does this create GS1 DataMatrix?
No. This pilot creates ordinary Data Matrix text. GS1 DataMatrix requires application identifiers, FNC1, and GS1-specific data rules.
Can this pilot encode non-English text?
Not yet. Input is deliberately limited to printable ASCII while encoding, decoding, and capacity behavior are validated for the pilot release.
