Validation before conversion
Spaces and standard hyphens are removed for checksum validation. ISBN-10 accepts nine digits plus a digit or X check character; ISBN-13 accepts only valid 978 or 979 prefixes.

- ISBN-13 keeps its valid 978/979 number
- Invalid checksums never reach the encoder
Formatting versus registration groups
Hyphen placement is not used to infer registration-group metadata in this tool. A safe display grouping is supplied to the encoder after the compact ISBN is validated; the bars encode the same thirteen digits.

What happens to an ISBN-10?
Its first nine digits receive the 978 Bookland prefix, then a new EAN-13 check digit is calculated.
Is X allowed in ISBN-13?
No. X is only a possible ISBN-10 check character. ISBN-13 contains digits only.
Why are only 978 and 979 accepted?
Those prefixes identify ISBN Bookland ranges within the EAN system.
Does this assign a new ISBN?
No. It validates and renders an existing ISBN; assignment comes from an authorized ISBN agency.
